Senior coach's update: October 18 2020

What a bizarre year it’s been, and obviously not one I would’ve predicted as my first at Mulgrave! While we didn’t get a footy season in 2020, it’s worth remembering that we put in a lot of work in the pre-season which will have ongoing benefits as we look toward the 2021 campaign.

The 2020 pre-season was a very positive one. Our focus was on resetting the club culture and we made some great progress, with plenty of enthusiasm about the direction we’re heading as a club. We’ve got the opportunity to continue that now and build on it for 2021.

We were able to introduce our playing style during the pre-season and we adapted to it very well, which gives us a good base to work on. As a coaching group we’re now preparing more layers to add to this.

As such, a high priority for us at the moment is the retention of our players for 2021, as well as strengthening the coaching and high-performance staff we already have. Nic McCaig will continue as Development Coach, while Mulgrave stalwart Matt Richards will coach the Under 19s. Our focus is on nurturing relationships with our players to build foundations for the new season both on and off the field. We’re creating touchpoints for players on family, work and footy to ensure their welfare is looked after.

Beyond this, we’re looking to actively recruit to further build a strong playing list for 2021.

In the weeks ahead we'll have further clarity around what the coming pre-season will look like. We’re looking forward to getting into it and finally getting back onto the park in 2021.
